Dubai Diamond Week 2024: A Hub for the Global Diamond Industry

by Madonna

Dubai will host the Dubai Diamond Week from November 11 to 15, 2024. This week-long event will include three main components: the Dubai Diamond Conference (DDC), the Kimberley Process (KP) Plenary Session, and the Jewellery, Gem & Technology in Dubai (JGTD) trade show.

The DDC will kick off the week on November 11, under the theme “Thriving Under Pressure: Navigating the New Global Paradigms.” This biennial conference will address critical issues facing the diamond industry, particularly the supply chain challenges linked to global economic and geopolitical uncertainties. Discussions will focus on the demand for greater transparency and traceability in the supply chain, emerging regulatory requirements, and the need for collective promotion to enhance market demand.

Key speakers at the conference will include Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, the UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, and Al Cook, the CEO of De Beers Group. The DDC will feature three expert panels that will explore both short- and long-term pressures on the industry, traceability mandates, and the changing regulatory environment, including environmental, social, and governance (ESG) regulations. The conference will conclude with a discussion on strategies for sustaining growth in the diamond sector.

Following the DDC, the JGTD trade show will take place from November 12 to 14. Since its launch in 2022, JGTD has quickly become a key event on the global jewellery calendar and an important platform for business-to-business (B2B) interactions. The show will connect gemstone dealers, jewellery manufacturers, and technology providers, offering three days of networking and trading opportunities.

The Kimberley Process Plenary Session will cap off the week, running from November 12 to 15. This session marks the end of the UAE’s second term as Chair of the Kimberley Process, led by Ahmed Bin Sulayem of the DMCC. Discussions will focus on the progress made during the UAE’s “Year of Delivery” and will aim to adopt key administrative decisions to combat conflict diamonds and further regulate the international diamond trade.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of DMCC, emphasized the importance of Dubai Diamond Week, stating, “With the UAE’s trade volumes for rough and polished diamonds increasing by 12 percent year-on-year to nearly 120 million carats in the first half of 2024, Dubai is solidifying its status as the largest diamond trade hub globally. This event will foster valuable discussions and networking opportunities, addressing vital issues in the industry.”

Now in its sixth year, the Dubai Diamond Conference has become a key event for the global diamond community, drawing participants from mining firms to luxury retailers. The DMCC continues to play a crucial role in the growth of the industry and in establishing Dubai as a leading diamond trading center, further enhanced by its management of the Dubai Diamond Exchange, the world’s largest diamond tender facility, which hosts over 1,300 diamond companies.
