Two men have been arrested in connection with the violent death of jeweler Hussein “Sam” Murray during an attempted robbery at his home in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
The suspects allegedly disguised themselves as DTE Energy workers, wearing high-visibility vests and claiming to check for a gas leak. When the 72-year-old Murray and his wife refused entry, the men returned the next day with fake documentation and were allowed inside.
Once in the home, they duct-taped the couple’s wrists and ankles, demanding money and jewelry. During the ordeal, Murray’s wife screamed for help, prompting one suspect to hit her. The attackers stole her phone and watch before fleeing in a white pickup truck marked with a DTE logo.
Murray’s wife managed to call 911. Authorities later found Murray dead in the basement, his wrists and ankles also bound.
The suspects have been identified as Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, from Dearborn, Michigan, and another man whose identity has not yet been released. Hernandez faces charges of felony murder, which carries a potential life sentence without parole, as well as two counts of unlawful imprisonment.
“This was a gruesome attack on an elderly couple in their home,” stated Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. “I have authorized the highest charge to ensure accountability for this brutal crime and to protect the public from violent offenders.”
