The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has been in power since 1966 and continues to lead in the upcoming election, despite a decline in voter support.
In this election, citizens will select members of the National Assembly. The party with the most seats will then choose the president. The BDP faces strong competition from a divided opposition, particularly the Umbrella for Democratic Change, led by lawyer Duma Boko. Two other parties have also put forward presidential candidates.
Economic issues are at the forefront of the campaign. Botswana, one of the wealthiest countries in sub-Saharan Africa due to its diamond resources, is facing a downturn in the global diamond market. This has resulted in a lowered economic growth forecast of only 1% for 2024.
Opposition leaders have criticized President Masisi for the slow growth, as well as increasing inequality and unemployment. While Masisi admits that his efforts to create jobs and boost the economy have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, he maintains that his plans are moving forward.
As the world’s top diamond producer by value, Botswana has struggled to diversify its economy. The BDP’s manifesto includes a strategy to enhance agricultural production and improve mineral processing.
Masisi became president in 2018 after a planned transition from his predecessor, Ian Khama, who served the maximum two terms. In the 2019 elections, the BDP won 38 out of 57 contested parliamentary seats.
With over one million registered voters in a population of about 2.3 million, the electoral commission expects a strong turnout. Election results are usually announced within a few days, shaping Botswana’s political landscape.
