Two Indian nationals have been arrested in Vietnam for attempting to smuggle over 1,000 diamonds in two separate incidents.
The first suspect was caught by customs officers at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Vietnam’s largest airport, on October 23. He arrived from India with 716 diamonds hidden in wallets and among his clothing and personal belongings. The diamonds were intended for sale to buyers in Ho Chi Minh City.
Three days later, customs officers at the same airport apprehended a second passenger arriving from Hong Kong. This individual was found with 362 diamonds hidden in 15 plastic bags at the bottom of two candy boxes.
Authorities reported that the diamonds included both natural and lab-grown varieties. They estimate the total value of the diamonds to be in the tens of billions of Vietnamese dong, with one billion dong equivalent to approximately $40,000.
