A groom called off his wedding after his fiancée demanded he replace the lab-grown diamond in her engagement ring with a natural one.
In a post on Reddit, he explained that he had spent $2,400 on the ring, but his fiancée was upset when she discovered the stone was lab-grown. She felt hurt by the cost, arguing that it reflected how little he valued her and the seriousness of their future together. She insisted he should have spent at least $20,000 on the ring.
The groom disagreed, stating that there were smarter ways to use such a large sum of money—such as paying off a car loan, saving for a house, investing, or even supporting her business idea.
Opening up on Reddit’s TrueOffMyChest forum, where users share personal confessions, he shared the emotional struggle in a post titled “Called off my engagement with my fiancée after her reaction to the engagement ring.”
In the post, he wrote, “Gentlemen: the price of a diamond ring should never dictate the quality of your marriage. I don’t need to be married to know that. I’ve been a supportive and committed partner (otherwise, she wouldn’t have accepted my proposal).”
He continued, “Her response shocked me, and after a lot of reflection, I ultimately decided to end our relationship. We clearly have different values, and I realized this isn’t the kind of marriage I want. It hurts — I won’t lie — but a price tag on a shiny mineral shouldn’t define the foundation of a partnership.”
This situation follows a similar story from July, where another bride-to-be called off her wedding after discovering the diamond in her $50,000 engagement ring was also lab-grown.
