Maruti Impex, a prominent diamond manufacturer with operations in Surat, Bhavnagar, and other cities, has announced a temporary shutdown of its operations for the next three to four months. This closure impacts approximately 15,000 employees, including diamond artisans, computer operators, and support staff in Surat, Bhavnagar, Amreli, and Junagadh.
In light of the uncertain timeline for reopening, the company has advised its workforce to seek alternative employment. Salaries were paid up until the Diwali break.
Maruti Impex, renowned for its diamond polishing operations, runs over 100 facilities, a mix of owned and outsourced units. The decision to halt production comes after the company’s founder, Suresh Lakhani, suffered a brain stroke three months ago and remains in a coma. Lakhani, who was the central figure in the company’s operations, had overseen everything from procurement to sales.
Following his illness, the company continued operations with support from family members and staff until Diwali. However, with adverse market conditions and the ongoing absence of Lakhani’s leadership, the company has opted to temporarily suspend its activities.
