Makems Jewellery, a fast-growing jewellery-making company based in Abuja, captivated visitors at its highly anticipated annual exhibition, held on December 7, 2024, at the Glowing Ages Academy in Kaura District. The event showcased a diverse collection of both handmade and imported jewellery, including earrings, long necklaces, bangles, bracelets, rings, and more, attracting hundreds of fashion enthusiasts, collectors, and potential clients.

The exhibition, which spotlighted Makems’ signature locally-produced pieces, aligned with Nigeria’s broader policy to promote local content and reduce reliance on imported goods. The range of products on display included contemporary designs as well as vintage-inspired treasures, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to supporting local artisans and craftsmanship.

Temitope Adejare, Director of Business Development at Makems Jewellery, addressed the gathering, highlighting the company’s dual focus on local production and imported jewellery. She noted the rising cost of imported goods due to the exchange rate between the Naira and the US dollar, prompting Makems to source high-quality local materials to create unique jewellery pieces that are both affordable and durable.

“Given the economic challenges, we have taken steps to reduce costs by sourcing local materials. This has allowed us to offer beautiful, locally-made jewellery that resonates with Nigerians and meets international standards,” Adejare said.

She emphasized that each Makems piece is one-of-a-kind, with no design repeated, making the brand particularly popular among buyers looking for exclusivity and originality. “Our clients value the uniqueness of our designs, and that’s why they keep coming back to our exhibitions,” she added.

While the exhibition featured imported jewellery, Adejare pointed out that many visitors were drawn to the locally-made pieces, noting that the quality and craftsmanship of Nigerian-made jewellery had improved significantly over the years. “Our locally-produced jewellery is not only unique but also durable, and it meets the expectations of our customers across various social strata,” she explained.

The company’s focus on affordability was another key highlight. Since the products are priced in Naira, customers found it easier to purchase without the added burden of fluctuating foreign exchange rates. Adejare also revealed that Makems is aiming to expand its reach beyond Nigeria’s borders, with long-term plans to export locally-produced jewellery and contribute to the appreciation of the Naira through international trade.

Beyond its economic goals, Makems has been a significant employer, providing job opportunities across Nigeria’s jewellery production value chain. Adejare emphasized the company’s role in creating local employment and expressed confidence in the brand’s future growth, particularly in expanding its online presence to cater to a wider audience.

Looking ahead, Makems Jewellery plans to become a household name in Nigeria and beyond, championing indigenous jewellery production while supporting the federal government’s drive to deepen local content across sectors.

“We are committed to offering durable, comfortable, and affordable jewellery while contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth,” Adejare concluded.
