Jewelry store owners in Peel Region are calling for stricter measures after a recent spike in brazen robberies. Shahrouz Ahmed, owner of Jannat Jewellers, experienced the alarming trend firsthand on Tuesday evening when thieves attempted to smash their way into his store.
Ahmed was working on his laptop near the front of his shop when a grey Jeep repeatedly rammed the store’s exterior windows and metal cage reinforcements. The vehicle approached at an angle to avoid security posts, Ahmed said.
The thieves tried to force their way inside but fled when the store filled with white smoke—a security measure Ahmed installed to deter robbers. The smoke creates a dense fog, obscuring visibility and thwarting theft attempts.
“My back was leaning against the wall when the car hit us so hard that everything moved forward,” Ahmed recalled.
At the time of the incident, a female customer was exiting the store, and two employees were assisting her. Glass shattered as the Jeep struck the building, but no one was injured. Three individuals were inside the Jeep, while two others waited outside in another car.
The failed robbery has prompted Ahmed and other jewelry store owners to speak out. They are urging lawmakers to impose tougher penalties on criminals and calling for increased police presence to address the growing problem. Some owners have even suggested taking matters into their own hands, though police advise against such actions.
“We need serious action,” Ahmed said. “The laws need to be stricter, and the penalties need to be harsher. We can’t keep living in fear.”
The incident highlights the escalating challenges faced by local businesses as they grapple with rising crime rates. Store owners are now left weighing their options, balancing safety concerns with the need to protect their livelihoods.
Authorities have yet to comment on the specific incident but are encouraging businesses to prioritize safety measures and report any suspicious activity.
For now, Ahmed and his peers remain on edge, hoping for stronger support from law enforcement and policymakers to curb the wave of robberies plaguing the region.
