Henry A. Hänni, a trailblazer in the field of gemology and former director of the Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF), passed away on January 9 at the age of 80.
Hänni’s passion for gemstones began during his time as a technical assistant at the University of Basel’s Mineralogical Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in beryl from the university in 1980 and joined SSEF that same year. A decade later, in 1990, he was appointed director of the institute.
During his tenure at SSEF, Hänni led groundbreaking research in areas such as pearl analysis, colored gemstones, treatment identification, and determining the origins of gemstones. In 1996, he also became a professor of gemology at the University of Basel, a role he continued even after retiring from SSEF in 2009.
In a statement, SSEF praised Hänni’s contributions, noting, “He inspired countless students and professionals worldwide through his teaching and mentorship, sharing not only his vast knowledge but also his infectious enthusiasm for the field.”
Reflecting on his lifelong passion in a 2016 video, Hänni said, “I still like gemstones. This is my life.”
Michael Krzemnicki, SSEF’s current director, highlighted Hänni’s legacy, stating, “Professor Hänni will be remembered not only for his extraordinary academic achievements but for his unique sense of curiosity. His warm personality and distinctive sense of humor touched all who knew him, making him not just a respected colleague but a beloved friend to many in the international gemological community.”
Hänni’s work and dedication have left an indelible mark on the world of gemology, inspiring generations of gemologists and enthusiasts alike.
