A high-level delegation of 18 members from India’s Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Jewellers Association Jaipur, and Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association visited Thailand from February 22 to 24, 2025. The visit aimed to explore collaborative opportunities in the gem and jewellery sector, marking a unified effort to strengthen trade ties between India and Thailand.
The highlight of the visit was the signing of three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on the opening day of the Bangkok Gem and Jewelry Fair (BGJF) on February 22, 2025. The agreements were signed in a grand ceremony attended by key industry leaders from Thailand, underscoring the commitment of both nations to long-term cooperation in the sector.
The MoUs were signed between:
- GJEPC’s Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery Research and Laboratories Centre (IIGJ-RLC) and GIT Thailand.
- Jewellers Association Jaipur and Chanthaburi Gem and Jewellery Traders Association.
- Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association (SGJIA) and Thai Silver Exporters Association (TSEA).
Key Highlights of the Agreements
Dr. Nawal Agarwal, Chairman of IIGJ Jaipur and Director of IIGJ-RLC, commented on the MoU between IIGJ-RLC and GIT Thailand. He said, “This agreement is a significant step toward harmonizing gemstone standardization, promoting joint research, and enhancing knowledge exchange. By working together, India and Thailand aim to build trust, transparency, and excellence in the global gem and jewellery industry.”
Dr. Agarwal also invited Thai associations to participate in the upcoming International Gem & Jewellery Show in Jeddah (Saudijex) in September 2025. He proposed a dedicated Thai Pavilion to further strengthen trade ties and explore new collaborative opportunities.
Alok Sonkhia, President of the Jewellers Association Jaipur, spoke about the MoU with the Chanthaburi Gem and Jewellery Traders Association. He said, “This partnership will boost the coloured gemstone trade between India and Thailand. Through knowledge exchange, expanded trade opportunities, and joint participation in global events, we aim to enhance market reach and support industry growth.”
Arvind Gupta, President of the Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association, highlighted the MoU with the Thai Silver Exporters Association. He stated, “This collaboration will drive innovation, design excellence, and market expansion in the silver jewellery trade. It will create new business opportunities for artisans and exporters in both countries while promoting global recognition of silver jewellery.”
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The delegation focused on building long-term partnerships across various areas, including trade, manufacturing, and education. They held productive meetings with leading Thai institutions, such as the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), a public organization under Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce. Discussions centered on streamlining laboratory processes, achieving mutual recognition of certifications, and developing joint skilling courses. These initiatives aim to enhance the skills of professionals in both countries and promote international standards.
The delegation also met with the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders Association (TGJTA) to discuss creating gemstone sourcing platforms and promoting the coloured gemstone trade. Additionally, they engaged with the Thai Silver Exporters Association (TSEA) to explore joint manufacturing ventures, technology sharing, and design innovation. Meetings with the Chanthaburi Gem and Jewellery Traders Association (CGTA) focused on forming a joint conglomerate for coloured gemstones to enhance global market collaboration.
Mutual Participation in Trade Shows
Both countries expressed interest in participating in each other’s trade shows. The Indian delegation invited Thailand to set up a pavilion at key Indian events, such as the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) in Mumbai, JAS, and JAGS Jaipur. They also invited a buyer delegation from Thailand to attend these shows in India.
This visit follows a high-level delegation from Thailand, led by GIT, visiting Jaipur in November 2024. The growing collaboration between India and Thailand is set to shape the future of the global gems and jewellery industry. It promises to unlock new opportunities for mutual growth, technological exchange, and the promotion of Indian and Thai gems and jewellery products worldwide.
The agreements and discussions during the visit reflect a shared vision to strengthen bilateral ties and elevate the gem and jewellery sector to new heights.
