At the 2024 Academy Awards on March 2, archival jewelry took center stage on the red carpet. Many stars opted for vintage pieces to complement their outfits. Among them was Robert Downey Jr., who wore a brooch with deep historical significance.
The actor’s lapel featured a double berry brooch designed by Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. The piece, crafted from gold and platinum, was adorned with rubies and diamonds. This design dates back to 1956 and holds a special place in American history.
John F. Kennedy purchased the same brooch for his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, when their son, John F. Kennedy Jr., was born.
“President-elect Kennedy personally selected and purchased this double berry brooch with diamonds and rubies at Tiffany & Co. for his wife on January 11, 1961, just days before his inauguration,” stated the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum. The brooch remains in the museum’s collection today.
Jacqueline Kennedy cherished the piece and wore it frequently. She even took it on her first trip abroad as First Lady in 1961.
Downey attended the Oscars not only as a nominee but also as a presenter for the Best Supporting Actor award. He had won the same award the previous year.
During his acceptance speech in 2023, Downey reflected on his journey. “I have my lousy childhood to thank and the Oscars to thank in that order,” he joked. He also shared a personal insight: “Here’s my little secret: I needed this job more than it needed me… I stand before you, and I’m a better person because of it. What we do matters, and what we decide to do matters.”
His brooch on Oscar night served as a striking tribute to both Hollywood glamour and American history.
