Richmond RCMP is cautioning the public after receiving three reports of fake jewelry scams in a single day.
Authorities are urging residents to avoid letting strangers handle their personal belongings and to be wary of individuals selling jewelry on the street.
According to police, scammers have been using two common tactics. In one approach, a suspect approaches people on the street, offering to sell counterfeit jewelry. In another method, the suspect handles a victim’s personal jewelry and covertly switches it with a less valuable item before returning it.
Cpl. Kenneth Lau of Richmond RCMP advises the public to be cautious. “Do not let strangers handle your personal items and be suspicious of anyone selling cheap jewelry on the street,” he said.
“No matter what explanation they give, do not buy from them,” Lau added. “Walk away and report the incident to your local police.”
