In a heartwarming display of community support, Omi Chamdi, the owner of No Ka ‘Oi Jewelers in Kahului, Maui, has initiated a remarkable jewelry rehabilitation effort to aid his neighbors affected by the devastating wildfires that struck the Hawaiian island last August. Chamdi, whose business miraculously survived the calamity, has been collaborating with industry partners to restore fire-damaged jewelry, providing a glimmer of hope to individuals who lost cherished pieces in the wildfires.
The initiative, born out of Chamdi’s desire to assist those less fortunate, involves cleaning and repairing damaged jewelry at no cost for individuals who bring their pieces to No Ka ‘Oi Jewelers. Inspired by a similar endeavor undertaken by a California jeweler after the 2018 Camp wildfire, Chamdi is leveraging his extensive industry experience and connections to make a meaningful impact on the lives of Maui residents.
Reflecting on the motivation behind his generous efforts, Chamdi states, “It was something that I was able to do because I’ve been in the industry for so many years and I have so many contacts with jewelers. These are my industry colleagues, and I’m grateful.”
Maui continues to recover from the aftermath of last year’s wildfires, which claimed a devastating toll of lives and property in Lahaina, Kula, Ka’anapali, and Pulehu. Chamdi took to social media, announcing his commitment to restoring jewelry for free for those who managed to salvage their precious items from the fire-ravaged areas.
Chamdi emphasizes the sentimental value attached to the jewelry he is restoring, stating, “Imagine losing everything that means something to you. You look for these special heirloom pieces—your engagement ring, your inherited pieces. To be able to find them is a miracle in and of itself.”
The jeweler’s altruistic efforts have already yielded positive outcomes, with over 150 pieces of jewelry already repaired, and an additional 300 awaiting restoration. Chamdi, along with his industry partners, either offers their services for free or at a reduced fee, covering all associated costs out of pocket for the affected Maui residents.
Among the heartfelt stories of restoration is that of Shelly Romo, who recovered her wedding ring from the ruins of her Maui home. Romo expressed her gratitude to Chamdi, noting the significance of the restored ring in symbolizing her family’s life on Maui.
Chamdi’s restoration efforts extend beyond conventional jewelry, with instances such as the refurbishment of a traditional money chain passed down through five generations and the transformation of a zipper buckle, the sole remaining piece from a Chanel bag, into a wearable accessory.
In discussing the profound impact on individuals, Chamdi shares, “It changes their whole attitude of life. These are pieces they want to pass on, and now they can continue that tradition. What was lost is now found and restored.”
Amidst the ongoing recovery, Chamdi remains humbled by the overwhelming response from the community. “There’s been a huge response from the community, and the love and support for what we are doing just keeps pouring in. It’s been an incredible journey,” he says, underscoring the resilience and unity displayed in the face of adversity.
