Zurich, Switzerland – The Gübelin Gem Lab has unveiled the Gem Passport, an innovative gemological document powered by Gemtelligence, a deep-learning software that ensures reliable lab testing at a lower cost.
Traditionally, the trade has been hesitant to invest in gemological reports from prestigious labs for certain stone sizes and commercial qualities. However, with the advancements in Gemtelligence™, the Gem Passport aims to change that by providing essential gemstone identification features. This includes species and variety, country of origin, and a simplified disclosure of treatment status, all determined by artificial intelligence. This approach streamlines the testing workflow, particularly the labor-intensive microscopic assessment, allowing for more affordable pricing.
The Gem Passport is available for unmounted rubies, blue sapphires, and emeralds up to 3.00 carats. Priced competitively at CHF 200 (USD 215), it is an attractive option for smaller or moderately valued gemstones. Unlike traditional reports, Gem Passports do not include quality or rarity additions such as trade color calls, appendices, info sheets, or rating documents. All Gübelin Gem Lab locations offer the Gem Passport service.
Daniel Nyfeler, Managing Director of the Gübelin Gem Lab, stated, “The Gem Passport is a highly attractive and affordable service for stones that previously lacked a testing document from a globally respected lab. It provides peace of mind to brands and retailers.”
Raphael Gübelin, President of the House of Gübelin, added, “The Gem Passport showcases our commitment to innovation and our pioneering spirit. We aim to support the industry by making gemological documents for smaller stones more accessible. Gem Passports are a natural progression following Gemtelligence, expanding our range of services and providing an affordable solution for gems of more moderate value.”
