An 83-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after a deadly shooting at a jewelry store in Daytona Beach, Florida.
John Craiger, who was reportedly a customer at Volusia Gold and Diamonds, became involved in an altercation with the store’s owner, Ghazi Osta, on Friday, July 19. According to local police, Craiger pulled out a gun and shot Osta at approximately 12:52 p.m.
Osta, who was working behind the counter at the time, was fatally struck by the gunfire.
In response to the shooting, another employee fired at Craiger, and a witness hit him on the back of the head with a blunt object. Both Osta and Craiger were transported to Halifax Medical Center. Osta was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young reported that Craiger suffered multiple gunshot wounds and a head laceration. No other individuals in the store were injured during the incident.
Craiger has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
