Diamond workers in India are worried about widespread job losses as the global recession continues. They are calling for government intervention to address the crisis affecting the diamond industry.
The concerns come after Kiran Gems began a 10-day closure on August 17. Reports indicate that many smaller and medium-sized diamond polishing businesses are also implementing shutdowns or reducing work hours.
In a Facebook post, the Diamond Workers Union Gujarat (DWUG) highlighted the growing anxiety: “The recession in the diamond industry raises fears that many artisans might leave the industry. If the government does not act quickly to support these workers, our crucial diamond sector could face collapse.”
The union warns that past recessions have led to artisans leaving the industry, which could force the government and business owners to find new workers in the future. They urge the government and industry leaders to support artisans to avoid a repeat of the 2008 crisis.
Bhavesh Tank, vice-president of DWUG, told Blunt Times: “Many diamond companies are randomly laying off 25 to 50 artisans at a time. This tactic hides the true number of affected workers and allows company owners to avoid paying bonuses and other benefits required by labor laws.”
