Almost all of the jewelry stolen in the “world’s biggest gem heist” five years ago is now back on display at the Green Vault museum in Dresden, Germany.
The historic collection, which includes 4,300 diamonds valued at $129 million, was stolen when thieves cut the power and used axes to smash the display cabinets.
Most of the stolen treasures were recovered in December 2022. Five members of the same family, aged 24 to 29, have been sentenced for their roles in the theft. Their sentences range from four years and four months to six years and three months.
Some of the recovered items were damaged during or after the heist. They went back on display last week in their damaged condition while legal proceedings continue.
Many of the diamonds now appear cloudy and grayish, likely due to prolonged water exposure. There are also traces of white powder, which is believed to have been used to remove fingerprints.
Among the stolen treasures were the famous 49-carat Dresden white diamond, purchased by August the Strong, Elector of Saxony, and valued at $12 million, as well as a sword encrusted with nine large diamonds and 770 smaller ones.
