The global market for fancy-color diamonds experienced a slight decline in the third quarter of 2024, but overall demand remained steady, according to the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF).
The Fancy Color Diamond Index reported a 0.5% drop in prices during the three-month period ending September 30. In the yellow diamond category, prices fell by 1.6%. This marked a slight improvement from a 1.7% decrease in the previous quarter. Over the past year, yellow diamond prices have dropped a total of 3.5%. The most significant decline in the third quarter was seen in 1-carat fancy-intense yellow diamonds, which fell by 3.8%.
Pink diamonds showed little change, with a minor decline of just 0.1% this quarter compared to a 0.2% drop in the previous three months. Over the past year, pink diamond prices have remained stable. Notably, fancy-vivid-pink diamonds performed well in the third quarter, with 3-carat stones increasing by 2.1% and 1-carat stones rising by 1.6%. However, fancy-intense pink diamonds in the 1.50- and 1-carat categories decreased by 3.1% and 0.4%, respectively.
Blue diamond prices declined by 0.7%, compared to a 0.3% decrease in the previous quarter. Prices for 8-carat blue diamonds remained stable, with a slight increase of 0.1%. In contrast, 1-carat blue diamonds fell by 1.1%, while 1.50-carat fancy-vivid and 5-carat fancy-intense blues dropped by 2% and 2.2%, respectively.
“Despite some declines this quarter, the fancy-color diamond market is showing resilience,” said Oz Mashiach, a data supplier for FCRF. “The slight decreases, especially in yellow diamonds, reflect broader economic uncertainties. However, the overall stability indicates steady demand. It’s encouraging to see that categories like vivid pinks continue to perform well, even in a challenging economic climate.”
Since the FCRF began collecting data in 2005, all fancy-color diamond categories have shown growth, with an overall increase of 209%. Yellow diamonds have seen a 54% rise, pink diamonds have surged by 398%, and blue diamonds have increased by 245%.
