A visitor to Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park left with a rare souvenir after discovering a white diamond during a search on September 27.
The guest arrived at the park early, around 8 a.m., and initially searched in the water for diamonds. When no luck came from the water, the visitor switched to land. “If I find a diamond today, it will probably be right here on the surface,” they said, according to an Arkansas State Parks news release.
While scanning the ground, the visitor noticed something sparkling. “From far away it shined so clearly,” the guest recalled. “I thought it might be a piece of trash or a bug, it was so much shinier than anything else out there.” Upon closer inspection, the visitor realized it was not trash or a bug, but a dazzling stone.
The diamond was brought to the park for inspection, where it was confirmed to be a 2.30-carat white diamond. Sarah Reap, a park interpreter, expressed surprise at the discovery, saying, “Even after a few years of working here, I am still surprised when a finder pulls a large diamond out of their pocket so nonchalantly.”
This diamond is the second-largest found at the park in 2024. It is about the size of a pencil eraser and has a pitted surface.
Since its discovery in 1906, more than 75,000 diamonds have been found at the Crater of Diamonds State Park.
