The Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), currently nearly empty, is hopeful that the arrival of 40 lab-grown diamond traders will boost its fortunes.
Opened last December by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Surat Diamond Bourse is recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest office building in the world. It has space for 4,500 offices, but most of the building remains unoccupied.
According to local media, the bourse has reached an agreement with the Lab Grown Diamond Association (LGDA) to move 40 companies specializing in lab-grown diamonds to Surat.
Mahesh Gadhvi, CEO of the SDB, shared that only 250 offices are currently in use, representing less than 6% of the building’s capacity.
“We are steadily progressing and working toward filling more offices and starting more businesses,” Gadhvi told CNBC.
