The Indian government is under pressure to adopt US guidelines that clearly distinguish between lab-grown and natural diamonds.
The Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), representing 10,000 members, has raised concerns about widespread confusion in how diamonds are marketed and advertised in India.
The council urges the government to follow the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines, which mandate that any man-made diamond be clearly labeled as such. According to these rules, the term “diamond” should only be used for natural, mined diamonds, and lab-grown diamonds must not be described as “real,” “genuine,” “natural,” or “precious” unless additional clarifications are made.
The GJEPC has formally requested that India’s Department of Consumer Affairs introduce stricter regulations to differentiate between the two types of diamonds.
The council emphasizes that the lack of standardized guidelines on diamond terminology leads to confusion among consumers and that there are no mandatory disclosure rules to indicate whether a diamond is natural or lab-grown.
