The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has released the Fall 2024 edition of its flagship publication, Gems & Gemology (G&G), offering new insights into diamond grading, artificial intelligence, and notable gem discoveries.
This issue highlights the evolution of grading for fancy-cut diamonds, particularly oval, pear, and marquise shapes. Recent findings are set to reshape the standards for evaluating these popular cuts, focusing on improving precision in the grading process. These discoveries will likely influence how both jewelers and consumers assess the unique traits of fancy-cut diamonds.
The publication also explores how machine learning models are enhancing traditional gem classification methods. These technologies are expected to improve the accuracy and efficiency of gemstone identification. Additionally, it examines the role of generative AI in jewelry design, addressing both its creative possibilities and the ethical, legal, and regulatory challenges associated with its use in the industry.
In a global gemological context, the Fall edition includes a comprehensive study of amethyst from the La Manche deposit in Newfoundland’s Avalon Zone, expanding knowledge about the unique qualities of this Canadian gemstone.
Other notable features include a historical discovery—a collection of treasures from a 1715 Spanish shipwreck—and a detailed diamond artwork replicating Nelson Mandela’s fingerprint. The issue also covers ongoing research into the colored bands found in CVD-grown diamonds, contributing to the study of synthetic diamond properties.
In celebration of its 90th anniversary, Gems & Gemology also offers a special photographic retrospective, showcasing its legacy since its first issue in 1934.
The Fall 2024 issue of Gems & Gemology is available both digitally and in print, inviting gemologists, jewelers, and enthusiasts to explore the latest advancements in gemological research and innovations.
