Three major diamond mines in Canada’s Northwest Territories—Diavik (Rio Tinto), Gahcho Kué (De Beers/Mountain Province), and Ekati (Burgundy Diamond Mines)—have teamed up to create a special diamond pendant. This one-of-a-kind piece, designed by Adamas Diamonds, features diamonds from each of the mines and is set in an 18-karat white gold caribou antler motif. The pendant symbolizes the northern heritage and community spirit of the NWT, with diamonds that highlight the region’s natural beauty.
The pendant showcases three diamonds: a 0.41-carat round brilliant-cut diamond from Ekati, a 0.51-carat radiant-cut diamond from Gahcho Kué, and a 0.41-carat round brilliant-cut diamond from Diavik. Together, these gems have an appraised value of over CAD $12,000.
This unique piece will be auctioned at the 2024 MAX Awards on November 28, during the Yellowknife Geoscience Forum. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Yellowknife Community Fundraising Club’s Adopt-A-Family program, which provides essential items and holiday gifts for local families in need.
Leaders from each of the participating mines spoke about the significance of the pendant. Matthew Breen, COO of Diavik Diamond Mine, called it a tribute to the NWT’s land, culture, and wildlife. Avischen Moodley, Country President of De Beers Canada, highlighted the caribou antler motif as a symbol of the deep connection between the NWT people and their land. Jeff Reinson, Vice-President of Operations at Burgundy Diamond Mines, emphasized the pendant’s representation of northern beauty and the mines’ commitment to community support and environmental responsibility.
Kathy Gray, a spokesperson for the MAX Awards, expressed her gratitude to the mines for their contribution. She noted that the funds raised from the auction will make a meaningful difference for the Adopt-A-Family program, helping to support local families during the holiday season.
