Alana Hadid, the model and elder sister of Gigi and Bella Hadid, is challenging traditional notions of engagement and commitment with her latest partnership. At 41, Hadid became engaged with a vintage amethyst rather than a diamond, reflecting her preference for nontraditional symbols of love. This decision aligns with a broader trend among Gen Z and Millennial generations who are delaying marriage or choosing to forgo it altogether.
Hadid’s new role as the face of The Marqe, a jewelry brand launching this Wednesday, feels like “kismet,” she said, noting the growing demand for more personalized and meaningful commitment jewelry. The Marqe, founded by designer Suzan Doganay-Es, aims to cater to these shifting societal norms. Doganay-Es, recognizing a gap in the jewelry industry, is reimagining commitment rings to reflect a new era of relationship dynamics and personal expression.
“The jewelry industry hasn’t really adapted to the changing trends in relationships and commitment,” Doganay-Es explained. “I saw a need to create pieces that reflect these evolving dynamics, from how people define commitment to the importance of individuality in their choices.”
The concept of a commitment ring is not new, tracing its origins to ancient times. Historically, such rings signified a promise between the betrothed, though today they are often linked to the concept of celibacy before marriage. The Marqe’s designs, however, aim to redefine commitment jewelry, offering customizable options that blend flexibility with meaning. Prices range from $250 to $5,000, with pieces made from various metals including 14-karat yellow and white gold, sterling silver, and gemstones such as emeralds, garnets, and lab-grown diamonds.
One standout feature of The Marqe is its interlocking rings, which can be opened to add additional solitaire bands, called “The Promise.” This adaptability allows wearers to customize their commitment jewelry throughout their lives, a concept Hadid embraces.
“As your style changes, so does your commitment,” Hadid said. “A ring someone gets at 25 might not be the same one they want at 55. With Marqe, you can always have the ring that you committed with and add to it, reflecting how relationships evolve.”
The brand’s philosophy extends beyond romantic partnerships. Hadid believes that commitment rings can also symbolize promises made to oneself, family, or friends. She explained, “The promise could be to fight for your people’s liberation or to be a better child to your mother. Looking at that piece of jewelry reminds you of the promises you’ve made, and that can be really profound.”
With The Marqe, Hadid and Doganay-Es are reshaping how we view and wear commitment jewelry, reflecting the changing tides of love, relationships, and personal growth.
