Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy has presented fellow Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti with a custom-designed diamond chain, intricately crafted in the likeness of Seun’s legendary father, Fela Kuti.
Seun Kuti shared the special gift on Instagram Wednesday, posting a photo of the stunning chain. In his caption, the Afrobeat star expressed his gratitude and noted that Burna Boy gave him the gift during their first in-person meeting.
“From @burnaboygram with love. We actually met properly for the first time and ODOGWU sent a gift. Thanks, bro. Big love,” Seun wrote.
Burna Boy, who has frequently acknowledged Fela Kuti’s monumental influence on his music, has often spoken of the late Afrobeat pioneer as both an inspiration and a childhood hero. However, Burna Boy has also rejected comparisons between himself and Fela, deeming them “dishonorable.”
“Fela is my inspiration and my childhood hero,” Burna Boy once stated. “If you think comparing me to Fela is honorable, it is actually not. It makes me feel weird. Fela was Fela, and if it wasn’t for him, there probably wouldn’t be any me. I do not understand the comparison.”
Burna Boy rose to prominence with the release of his debut single “Like to Party” from the album L.I.F.E (2013) and has since earned numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 2021 for Twice as Tall (2020).
