Lucara Diamond Corp. has unveiled the winning names for two extraordinary diamonds unearthed at its Karowe mine in Botswana this year. The names were chosen through a nationwide contest, with each reflecting the cultural significance of Botswana.
The larger of the two stones, a remarkable 2,488-carat diamond discovered in August, has been named Motswedi, a Setswana term meaning “water spring” or “the flow of underground water that emerges to the surface, offering life and vitality.”
Meanwhile, the 1,094-carat diamond, recovered in September, has been named Seriti, which translates to “aura” or “presence” in Setswana.
The names were selected by a panel of judges who evaluated entries based on creativity, originality, cultural relevance, and their connection to the diamonds. As part of the competition, the person who named the 2,488-carat diamond will receive a prize of 100,000 pula (approximately $7,325), while the winner of the 1,094-carat stone will be awarded 50,000 pula (roughly $3,662). Both winners will also be treated to a tour of the Karowe mine.
Lucara has indicated that it is currently exploring potential sale options for both the Motswedi and Seriti diamonds.
