On January 2, Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in Quang Nam Province, announced that four significant artifacts from the region have been officially recognized as National Treasures.
This recognition was part of the 13th National Treasure designation, approved on December 31, 2024, by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long. A total of 33 artifacts from across the country were designated as National Treasures, with Quang Nam Province contributing several key pieces to the list.
The recognized items from Quang Nam include a collection of gold jewelry and agate animal-shaped artifacts from the Lai Nghi burial site, which are currently housed at the Quang Nam Museum. Additionally, two Dong Son artifacts—a bronze drum and a bronze jar—belonging to Luong Hoang Long from Cam Pho Ward in Hoi An City were also honored.
All the newly recognized artifacts are noted for their uniqueness, originality, and significant historical and cultural value.
The gold jewelry collection, which is part of the Sa Huynh cultural heritage, includes 108 well-preserved items. These artifacts date back to between the 3rd century BCE and the mid-1st century CE. The collection features intricate gold jewelry that showcases the advanced craftsmanship of the time.
In addition to the gold jewelry, the Lai Nghi burial site also yielded two agate artifacts. One is a pendant or bead carved from agate, depicting a small water bird, while the other represents a tiger. Both pieces are finely detailed, with holes drilled through them for stringing.
These agate items were uncovered during an archaeological excavation at the Lai Nghi site, which is noted for its well-preserved cultural layers. The age of the artifacts has been confirmed using various scientific methods. Their exceptional craftsmanship and historical significance meet the criteria required for National Treasure status.
The Dong Son bronze drum and jar, which date from the 4th–3rd century BCE to the 1st–2nd century CE, reflect the advanced metallurgical and artistic achievements of the Dong Son culture. These items further highlight the rich cultural history of ancient Vietnam.
With this latest recognition, Quang Nam Province now boasts seven National Treasures. The recognition of these artifacts underscores the province’s deep historical and cultural heritage, enhancing its status as a key destination for both scholarly research and cultural tourism.
