Jewelers are praising actor Zendaya for putting the spotlight on the east-west engagement ring setting, a style that’s gaining popularity after her recent engagement to fellow actor Tom Holland. The horizontal orientation of the ring is being celebrated for its simplicity and elegance, with experts predicting it will become a major trend in 2025.
“Cookie-cutter engagement rings are out,” says Nadine Tacorian Arzerounian, head of design at Tacori. “Your ring should reflect your personality. Zendaya always makes bold style choices, and I love how she’s taken a classic design and made it uniquely her own.”
The east-west setting, where the gemstone is placed horizontally rather than vertically, creates the illusion of a larger stone and revives a popular art deco aesthetic. Rachel Boston, a jeweler known for her east-west designs, notes that this style dates back to the 15th century and saw a surge in popularity during the 1920s.
While Arzerounian believes the east-west setting will dominate engagement ring trends in 2025, she also expects couples to explore other designs. Artisan rings that emphasize individuality and intentionality are likely to rise in demand, alongside three-stone rings that symbolize the past, present, and future of a relationship.
Geometric shapes, such as carré and baguette cuts, are also expected to attract attention as couples seek contemporary designs. Additionally, Arzerounian predicts that double- or triple-split bands will become fashionable, adding a unique touch to engagement and wedding ring sets.
Zendaya’s choice has not only highlighted a timeless style but also inspired jewelers and couples alike to embrace creativity and personal expression in their engagement ring selections.
