A homeowner in northern Greece has reported a burglary in which thieves made off with jewelry valued at €1 million. The incident occurred in the village of Fourka, located in Kassandra, Halkidiki, while the homeowner was away.
The 76-year-old homeowner, who had been absent since the start of the year, returned to her residence on Monday only to discover that intruders had broken in through the front door. According to state broadcaster ERT, the burglars appeared to have prior knowledge of the home’s layout. They went straight to the bedroom, where a safe was hidden in the floor of a wardrobe.
The thieves removed the safe, dragged it outside, and loaded it into a vehicle before fleeing the scene. The homeowner told police that the safe contained jewelry and precious gems worth €1 million. The items held significant sentimental value, as they were gifts from her late husband, who owned a jewelry store in the United States. The couple had previously lived in the U.S. before returning to Greece.
The house was not equipped with an alarm system or security cameras, complicating the investigation. Police are now reviewing footage from neighboring homes’ security cameras in hopes of identifying the suspects.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the crime, which has left the homeowner devastated by both the financial and emotional loss.
