A troubling case has surfaced in Pune, where a minor boy stole his grandmother’s jewelry to impress a friend he met on Instagram. The incident, which occurred in Ambegaon Budruk, has caused distress in the boy’s family, especially after his father declined to take custody of him.
The 9th-grade boy had befriended a 24-year-old tattoo artist on Instagram. The woman, recently heartbroken, was looking for new connections online. Their conversations quickly led to plans for in-person meetings. To fund their outings, the boy stole a gold chain from his grandmother and sold it for ₹1.3 lakh.
With the stolen money, the two spent time at various popular spots, including Fergusson College Road. The situation escalated when the boy’s father filed a missing person report at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Police Station. The police acted quickly, locating both the boy and his friend.
During questioning, the boy admitted to selling the gold chain and splitting the money with the woman. A theft case was filed against both of them.
The boy was presented in court, where his father refused to take custody, citing the severity of the crime. As a result, the boy was sent to a juvenile home. Police officials are now counseling the family, warning that staying in a juvenile home might negatively affect the boy’s mental health.
Authorities have urged the parents to take custody of the boy and provide him with counseling to avoid further behavioral problems. Assistant Police Inspector Sameer Kadam is overseeing the investigation.
