After nearly 20 years as a beloved Durango jeweler, Jamie King, owner of Jamie’s Fine Jewelry, has announced the permanent closure of her shop at the end of March.
“It’s bittersweet,” King said. “I’m going to miss it, but I’m also looking forward to the future.”
King, who has spent 35 years in the jewelry business, said she is ready for a change. She looks forward to enjoying more freedom, joining friends on spontaneous outings, and stepping away from the demanding schedule of running a business.
“I want the time while I’m still healthy and able,” she explained.
Jamie’s Fine Jewelry opened its doors at 125 E. 10th St. in 2002. For 18 years, the shop has been a trusted destination for jewelry sales, repairs, and custom designs. King has helped countless customers with engagement rings, anniversary gifts, and family heirlooms, playing a role in some of their most cherished moments.
“It’s pretty cool,” King said. “When you sell an engagement ring, it’s almost like you develop a relationship with the couple.” She often receives photos from customers celebrating milestones with jewelry she created or repaired.
King credits her success to the Durango community, which has supported her shop year after year. She also expressed gratitude for her wife, friends, and family, who have stood by her throughout her career.
A third-generation Durangoan, King began her career right after high school. She started working at McKnights, a now-closed local jeweler, where she discovered her passion for the craft.
“I just fell into it,” she said. “I really liked the work, and my boss thought I had a knack for it.”
After 17 years at McKnights, King decided to open her own store when the business closed. Now, after 35 years in the industry, she feels it’s time to start a new chapter in her life.
The closure of Jamie’s Fine Jewelry will leave a gap in Durango’s business community. The shop is the only local store offering specialized jewelry repair and refurbishing services.
“I’m really hoping someone will come along and fill that need,” King said.
Her decision to retire is not due to a lack of business. In fact, the past year has been one of her busiest. However, King said she is ready to step away on her own terms.
“It’s nice to walk away because I want to, not because I have to,” she said.
In retirement, King plans to enjoy activities like boating, golfing, and traveling. She joked, quoting a friend, “They don’t drag you past the bank on the way to the cemetery.”
Reflecting on her career, King expressed deep gratitude to the Durango community. “It’s been an awesome ride,” she said. “Thank you.”
Jamie’s Fine Jewelry will remain open until the end of March, giving customers one last chance to visit the shop and celebrate its legacy.
