The Jewelry Symposium (TJS), a leading event for the jewelry industry, will address critical topics such as sustainable gemstone sourcing, artificial intelligence (AI) in design, and advancements in 3D printing during its 2025 edition. Scheduled for May 17–20 at the Detroit Marriott Troy in Metro Detroit, the symposium will expand to three full days to accommodate a growing demand for innovative discussions.
Linus Drogs, TJS chairman of the board, noted that the event received an unprecedented number of speaker proposals this year. As a result, the agenda has broadened beyond its traditional focus on metallurgy and craftsmanship to include cutting-edge technologies and sustainability practices.
“2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for our industry, with record-high gold prices and ongoing tariff uncertainties. Events like the Symposium are essential for staying ahead of the curve,” Drogs told JCK.
Focus on Technology and Innovation
The symposium will feature industry experts discussing the latest technological advancements. Scott Bradford of Gesswein will present on CAD techniques and software for jewelry design. Consultant Anne Miller will explore the role of generative AI in the industry, while Joseph Strauss of HJE Company Inc. will highlight innovations in additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing.
Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing
On the sustainability front, Jenny Luker of Platinum Guild International (PGI) will introduce a newly developed platinum alloy. Eric Branwaurt of Columbia Gem House and consultant Frank Cooper will address the traceability of colored gemstones, emphasizing ethical sourcing and responsible supply chains.
“We are grateful to the experts sharing insights on CAD, AI, and additive manufacturing, as well as those focusing on sustainability and gemstone traceability,” Drogs said.
A Collaborative Global Community
TJS describes itself as a passionate, nonprofit global community dedicated to fostering creativity, innovation, and the advancement of jewelry-making. The event brings together bench jewelers, designers, manufacturers, students, retailers, and media to exchange ideas and skills, driving progress in jewelry manufacturing technology worldwide.
Continuing a Legacy
Now in its third year, TJS carries forward the legacy of the Santa Fe Symposium, which ran for over three decades before concluding in 2022. Following the sale of organizer Rio Grande and pandemic-related disruptions, key figures like Drogs revived the event under a new name but with the same collaborative spirit.
The inaugural TJS in 2023 exceeded expectations, attracting over 90 participants—more than double the anticipated turnout. This year’s expanded agenda reflects the event’s growing importance as a platform for innovation and knowledge-sharing in the jewelry industry.
