Tiffany & Co. is reaffirming its commitment to its iconic Bird motif, a design originally created by Jean Schlumberger. During LVMH Watch Week, CEO Anthony Ledru revealed to Robb Report that the avian-inspired emblem will remain a central focus for the brand. This vision is now taking shape in the latest Bird on a Pearl capsule collection, which showcases the famous bird perched atop exquisite natural pearls.
The Bird on a Pearl concept debuted in 2023 under the creative direction of Nathalie Verdeille, who reimagined the diamond-adorned bird with a new twist. What sets this collection apart is its use of exceptionally rare natural saltwater pearls. These pearls are increasingly difficult to find due to rising ocean pollution. According to Sotheby’s, most natural saltwater pearls available today were harvested over a century ago.
Tiffany & Co. sources these pearls through Hussein Al Fardan, a leading expert in natural saltwater pearls from the Gulf region. Al Fardan owns the largest private collection of such pearls in the area. Their rarity is so profound that assembling a single necklace—requiring pearls of matching size, shape, and luster—can take up to 20 years. This marks the third consecutive year Al Fardan has exclusively partnered with Tiffany & Co., granting access to his prized collection.
While the Bird motif takes center stage, the collection also features other nature-inspired designs, including acorn and leaf motifs. Highlights include drop earrings and a toi et moi ring showcasing pearls in varying hues. One standout piece is a ring featuring a striking gray drop-shaped natural pearl weighing over 12 carats, set in a platinum and 18-karat yellow gold nest adorned with diamond-accented leaves.
Combining the rarity of natural pearls with Tiffany & Co.’s legacy and Al Fardan’s expertise, these pieces are true collector’s items. Designed for serious jewelry enthusiasts, they are heirlooms meant to be cherished for generations.
