Chopard has revealed its latest high-jewelry collection, drawing inspiration from a rare and impressive gem. The collection, named Insofu, incorporates a 6,225-carat emerald found in Zambia’s Kagem mine in 2010. The emerald, which was named “Insofu” after the Bemba word for “elephant,” was chosen for its striking resemblance to an elephant’s trunk and its enormous size.
The intricate value of gemstones often lies beyond their cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. Other factors, such as the gem’s history, origin, and even the rough from which it was cut, can significantly impact its worth. This is certainly the case with the Insofu emerald, which is now at the heart of Chopard’s high-jewelry line.
In 2022, Chopard acquired the massive rough emerald, and the challenge of turning it into fine jewelry was entrusted to Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s co-president and artistic director. Emeralds, being softer and more fragile than diamonds, present a unique challenge for jewelers. The stone’s full potential is only revealed once it has been carefully cut. To ensure the best outcome, Chopard brought in world-renowned gemstone cutters from India to Geneva. The cutting process took nearly a year to complete.
Scheufele expressed the collection’s vision, stating, “In every stone lies a story, and my role is to listen and honor the natural magic they carry as treasures from the earth. With the Insofu Collection, it was about respecting this inherent beauty.”
The result is a stunning 16-piece collection that features 850 carats of emeralds. The collection blends nature-inspired themes with Chopard’s signature high-jewelry designs, such as Art Deco-inspired chokers, flowing wraparound necklaces, and a delicate pearl cuff adorned with emerald foliage. The standout piece is an elephant-shaped pendant, raised trunk symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. The pendant includes over 50 emeralds, surrounded by diamonds, and is attached to a long chain that can also be worn as a brooch.
In addition to its remarkable design, Chopard’s Insofu collection is linked to wildlife conservation. The brand has partnered with Elephant Family, a charity founded by Mark Shand in 2002, which works to protect elephants and reduce human-elephant conflicts. A portion of the proceeds from each piece sold will support the organization’s efforts in preserving migratory corridors and promoting coexistence between humans and elephants.
