Kim Kardashian has revealed that her 15-carat engagement ring from ex-husband Kanye West will be passed down to their eldest daughter, North West.
In a recent episode of The Kardashians, the 44-year-old reality star shared that she still possesses the original engagement ring given to her by West, 47, which was designed by renowned jeweler Lorraine Schwartz. Notably, it was the only piece of jewelry she chose to leave behind during her 2016 trip to Paris—a decision that, in hindsight, proved significant.
Kardashian was in Paris for Fashion Week when robbers broke into her apartment at the Hotel de Pourtalès and stole over $10 million worth of jewelry. Reflecting on the traumatic event, she recounted how her decision to leave the engagement ring behind prevented it from being taken.
“My first one that I got engaged with Kanye [was] a cushion cut, and that was the only piece of jewelry that I owned that I didn’t take to Paris,” Kardashian said on the show. “So that one I’m going to give to Northie because she was with me when I got engaged. She held it after, and I took a photo. She was just a few months old.”
West proposed to Kardashian in October 2013, on her 33rd birthday, just months after the birth of their daughter in June of that year. The engagement ring, a custom 15-carat diamond, was later upgraded by West to a larger 20-carat emerald-cut diamond, also designed by Schwartz. However, Kardashian considers the original ring the most meaningful piece in her collection.
In the same episode, Kardashian recalled a warning from West regarding her jewelry. He had advised her against wearing both engagement rings at once, fearing it would make her a target for theft. She remembered an instance when West saw an Instagram post of her wearing both rings and immediately cautioned her.
“Kanye saw it and went, ‘Don’t you ever wear both of your rings at the same time. Are you looking to get robbed?'” she recounted.
The 2016 robbery deeply affected Kardashian, prompting her to reduce her use of extravagant jewelry. She now prefers to borrow statement pieces rather than own them, a precautionary measure shaped by her past experience.
In 2019, Kardashian shared on Instagram that she had obtained a replica of her stolen engagement ring, created by Lorraine Schwartz. While she does not own the duplicate, she occasionally borrows it for special occasions.
Kardashian’s decision to gift the engagement ring to North highlights the sentimental value she places on family heirlooms. North, who has previously worn pieces from her father’s wardrobe, will inherit a significant part of her parents’ history.
One notable instance of North honoring her father’s legacy occurred in July 2022 when she attended Paris Fashion Week wearing West’s Pastelle varsity jacket. The cobalt blue jacket held historical significance, as West wore it to the 2008 American Music Awards, where he won Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Male Artist.
Pastelle, West’s first fashion venture, never fully materialized, making original pieces rare and highly sought after. In 2022, a similar jacket to the one North wore sold for $10,000 online. Shortly afterward, Kardashian purchased the same jacket from high-end consignment store owner Justin Reed as a surprise for North before their trip to Paris.
By preserving and passing down these meaningful items, Kardashian ensures that North has tangible connections to her family’s history and legacy.
