A special collaboration between the popular Japanese manga series Chiikawa and a local jewelry brand has captivated fans in Hong Kong, with a line of Chiikawa-themed gold jewelry selling out in less than two hours at its debut event in Tsim Sha Tsui.
The collection, which included six gold charms and three gold pendants, launched at 10:30 AM on Sunday. By noon, a line of around 150 fans had gathered outside the store, with some arriving as early as 7:00 AM to secure their piece of the limited-edition collection.
The prices for the jewelry pieces were reported to be around HK$2,100 for a gold charm bracelet and HK$540 for a gold pendant. According to online sources, the Chiikawa charm weighs about 0.9 grams, while the pendant weighs around 0.2 grams.
Among the eager customers was 21-year-old university student Pak Suramed, who spent nearly two hours in line and purchased all six items for a total of about HK$8,000. He expressed that, if there had been no purchase limits, he would have bought even more pieces.
In addition to individual collectors, parents were also seen buying Chiikawa jewelry for their children as gifts. Lau, a mother, shared that both she and her daughter are huge fans of the Chiikawa characters, and she believes that the “Chiikawa economy” is more appealing than the “Panda economy.”
Other customers echoed similar sentiments, with a couple expressing their preference for Chiikawa over pandas, not just for the characters’ popularity, but also due to the exclusivity of the limited-edition items.
