LaRose Industries has issued a recall for approximately 224,100 Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem jewelry kits due to potential health hazards. The kits contain a liquid resin that may cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation, as well as sensitization when inhaled, touched, or ingested.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated that the resin used in these kits includes hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), a type of acrylate that exceeds the safety limits established by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act for children’s products.
Consumers who have already used the kits should inspect their jewelry to ensure it is fully cured. If any liquid or residue remains, the jewelry should not be worn and must be kept away from children. Once the resin has completely hardened, it no longer poses a risk.
The recall covers 10 different models of Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem jewelry kits, along with one refill pack. These kits include a resin bottle and a UV setting light to cure the resin. They are packaged in rectangular boxes labeled with the “Cra-Z-Art” brand name and either “Gemex” or “crazy gel2gem.”
LaRose Industries has urged customers to stop using the kits immediately and contact the company for a full refund. The company is also reaching out directly to all known purchasers.
The recalled kits were sold nationwide at Target, Marshall’s, T.J. Maxx, Joann stores, and other retailers. They were also available online at Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com, and Joann.com between January 2023 and September 2024, with prices ranging from $13 to $36, depending on the model.
