Pune experienced a notable increase in gold sales on Gudi Padwa, as jewelry stores across the city saw a significant rise in foot traffic. Despite gold prices reaching record highs, customers remained eager to purchase gold and invest in jewelry.
Gudi Padwa, a festival regarded as auspicious for buying gold, brought a steady stream of shoppers, even as 24-carat gold prices surpassed ₹90,000 per 10 grams. However, the high prices did not deter buyers, who flocked to jewelry stores throughout the city.
Busy Markets and Increased Sales
Key markets, including those on Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road, Tulshibaug, Appa Balwant Chowk, Deccan, Kothrud, and Sonya Maruti Chowk, were packed with customers all day long. Shoppers bought a wide range of gold items, from traditional jewelry and mangalsutras to bangles, rings, coins, and bars.
Traders reported that sales on Gudi Padwa exceeded expectations, with festival discounts and special offers encouraging more purchases.
Shift in Buying Habits and Investment Approaches
While women mainly focused on buying new jewelry, many showed a preference for handcrafted and designer pieces. The younger generation leaned towards lightweight and trendy jewelry. With gold prices on the rise, some buyers opted for a more gradual investment strategy, purchasing smaller amounts of gold at regular intervals.
Online shopping also saw a surge, reflecting the evolving shopping habits of customers. “Gold prices have risen sharply over the past two years, and experts believe this trend will continue. We took advantage of festival offers and bought jewelry for our daughter’s wedding,” said Avinash Patil, a working professional who was shopping for gold.
