Christie’s will showcase a rare and significant private collection of jewels by renowned designer Joel Arthur Rosenthal, known as JAR, at its upcoming Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva.
The sale, titled “A Bouquet of Gems: A Superb Collection of Jewels by JAR,” will take place on May 14 at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva. According to the auction house, this collection is one of the largest and most important private holdings of JAR’s work ever offered at auction.
The collection features 21 pieces, all acquired by a single collector in the early 2000s and 2010s. It carries a combined low estimate of $3 million. Notably, none of the items have previously appeared at auction or been offered for sale on the market.
The highlight of the collection is the “Apricot Blossom” bracelet, which is expected to fetch between $340,000 and $570,000. Also included in the sale are a multi-gem chain necklace estimated at $285,000 to $400,000, and a set of “Semainier” bracelets with an estimated value between $140,000 and $200,000.
All three of these standout pieces were featured in the 2013 JAR retrospective at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. That exhibition included 400 works and marked a historic moment, as Rosenthal became the only living jeweler ever honored with a solo retrospective by the museum.
Christie’s emphasized the exclusivity of JAR’s creations. The designer produces just 70 to 80 pieces each year, each one uniquely made for individual clients. His work is celebrated for its bold use of color, intricate detail, and signature pavé setting technique.
The designs in “A Bouquet of Gems” reflect Rosenthal’s artistic innovation and the refined taste of the private collector, Christie’s added.
