ROSS – The Ross Vaga Probus Club was recently treated to a captivating exhibition of gemstone craftsmanship, as Alan Poultney, a seasoned lapidarist boasting an illustrious 48-year career, unveiled the mesmerizing world of gemstone cutting. The event took place on the 22nd of August, leaving attendees spellbound as they witnessed a rough tourmaline metamorphose into a resplendent gem, exceeding three carats in weight.
Originally hailing from Zimbabwe and currently a resident of Kent, Alan Poultney, accompanied by his skilled assistant Sue Poultney, held the audience in rapt attention, sharing insights into his deep passion for the art of gemstone cutting. “My fervor for this craft empowers me to create gemstones that allow light to traverse through them unhindered, resulting in a breathtaking spectacle of radiant colors that never fail to astonish,” Alan Poultney enthused.
What set this demonstration apart was the ingenious use of contemporary technology. Alan and Sue orchestrated a live projection of the intricate cutting process using a mobile phone camera, casting the magic onto a large screen. This technological enhancement ensured that each member of the Probus Club had the privilege of experiencing the artistry up close, akin to a front-row seat to the spectacle.
The event not only showcased the remarkable skill of Alan Poultney but also underscored the enduring allure of lapidary craftsmanship, leaving the Ross Vaga Probus Club with a profound appreciation for the enchanting world of gemstones.
