Bangkok, September 6 – After several years of subdued activities due to the global pandemic, the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair has made a dazzling return, showcasing an array of stunning gemstones and jewelry pieces.
This special edition of the fair, marking its 40th anniversary, is drawing substantial attention, with an expected attendance of 30,000 visitors, doubling the figures from the previous year when the event returned following an 18-month hiatus. On the opening day alone, which marked the 68th Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair, a remarkable 10,000 attendees graced the event, setting a promising tone for the remainder of the week.
Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit, Director-General of the Thailand Ministry of Commerce’s Department of International Trade Promotion, expressed optimism about the event’s trajectory, highlighting the notable presence of international participants. The fair, held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, will run until September 10.
Thailand has long been renowned for its expertise in colored gemstones, and nearly half of the exhibition space at the fair is dedicated to loose gemstones. The United States and Europe are particularly drawn to the region for its exquisite rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, although diamonds, silver, and gold have been gaining prominence in buyers’ preferences.
Sumed Prasongpongchai, Director of the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand, emphasized the significance of colored gemstones while expressing confidence in the appeal of gold and silver jewelry this year.
Throughout the convention center’s newly renovated halls, visitors encountered a spectacular display of bold and vibrant jewelry pieces. The show featured an abundance of crimson rubies, deep blue sapphires, pink sapphires, and rich emeralds, juxtaposed with dazzling white diamonds, set in white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or silver settings. Designs ranged from intricate floral and nature motifs, including animals such as peacocks and elephants, to classic gemstone pendants, cuffs, and rings.
Bangkok-based Blue River captivated attendees with exquisite brooches, necklaces, rings, and earrings adorned with sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and diamonds set in 18k gold. Notable among their offerings was a necklace resembling a graceful peacock, commanding $64,000 for the set.
Beauty Gems, another Bangkok-based jeweler, showcased elephant brooches crafted from Swiss blue topaz, pink sapphires, and diamonds on 18k white gold, along with a necklace featuring 100 carats of rubies and diamonds. A striking 77-carat emerald necklace from Zambia adorned with diamonds was also on display.
Taevika by K&N Gems, hailing from Chanthaburi, Thailand, presented an organic-inspired collection characterized by opulent bib necklaces, drop earrings, cocktail rings, and bracelets. The collection featured an array of gemstones, including South Sea pearls, amethysts, pink sapphires, pink rose quartz, rubies, garnets, opals, and mother-of-pearl, all harmoniously integrated into luxurious pieces.
In the world of Thai jewelry, it’s clear that more is indeed more, and this extravagant display is a testament to the opulence and creativity that the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair continues to offer.
