Greenwich St. Jewelers: A Harmonious Blend of History and Modern Elegance

by Madonna

In a tribute to legacy and modernity, Greenwich St. Jewelers, co-owned by Jennifer Gandia and Christina Gandia Gambale, continues to enchant its patrons with a rich history and contemporary jewelry. Originally established in 1976 on Greenwich Street in the Wall Street area by their parents, the sisters have not only sustained but revitalized the family business, overcoming challenges like the aftermath of 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the business, Jennifer and Christina rebranded and refurbished their retail venue on Trinity Place. Their dedication to preserving tradition and paying homage to downtown NYC is evident in their beautifully appointed jewelry shop. Described by Jennifer Gandia as “luxury without pretension,” the space mirrors a classic Manhattan railroad apartment, divided into ‘rooms’ displaying the work of over 40 independent designers.

The sisters’ journey, marked by strength, resilience, and business acumen, is a testament to their enduring passion for jewelry. Through thoughtful design, they have created a sumptuous yet inviting space, aligning with their vision of luxury that feels like home. “Each jewel is a memory transmitter—it brings you back to special intimate moments and bonds you to the precious people and occasions in your life,” says Jennifer Gandia.

The Obsidian House, dating back to 1857, houses the current shop. Careful restoration of the original facade and the retention of the historic brick arch inspired the overall design. The VIP room, designed to evoke an outdoor terrace, features custom mica-flecked plaster, tropical-themed ginkgo leaf tiles in the restroom, and commissioned art installations. The interior art, influenced by the downtown scene, includes a mural by Mason Nye and an original painting by Rosalie Knox using nail polish that glows in the dark.

The intricate details throughout the shop create a sense of discovery for customers, transforming the space into a lush yet approachable environment. Greenwich St. Jewelers showcases designs from acclaimed talents such as Eva Fehren, Alice Cicolini, Erica Molinari, Marla Aaron, Megan Thorne, Rebecca Overmann, Sarah Freedenfeld for Amali Jewelry, Nada Ghazal, Lorraine West, Todd Pownell, and more.
