AGTA’s Ongoing Commitment to Ethical Standards in the Gemstone Industry

In the intricate realm of colored gemstones, the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) stands as a beacon of ethical principles and transparency, shaping the industry’s reputation for over four decades. Founded in 1981, AGTA has consistently championed transformative change and unwavering standards, leaving an indelible legacy of enlightenment and ethical excellence.

One significant chapter in AGTA’s history unfolded in 2008 when, in collaboration with the Tanzanite Foundation, it established a flood relief fund to assist those affected by a catastrophe in the tanzanite-producing Merelani region of Tanzania. This endeavor showcased AGTA’s commitment to proactive industry engagement and ethical responsibility.

In 2010, AGTA joined forces with the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) and the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), leading to an alignment on disclosure codes. AGTA’s subsequent granting of licensing rights to CIBJO demonstrated a commitment to harmonizing industry practices and setting ethical benchmarks.

The year 2014 marked another milestone as AGTA collaborated with the Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC) to address Dodd-Frank Act compliance. AGTA’s advocacy campaign ensured its members’ awareness and ability to meet legal obligations, showcasing a dedication to legal compliance.

AGTA’s commitment to evolving and adapting to industry needs was underscored in 2014 when new bylaws were developed, solidifying its dedication to staying abreast of changing dynamics.

In 2015, AGTA enhanced its Code of Ethics, emphasizing strict compliance with all U.S. laws and regulations. This addition reflected AGTA’s ongoing efforts to promote responsible business practices.

The following year, AGTA invested over $25,000 in a silicosis abatement project, showcasing its commitment to health and safety standards within the industry. Simultaneously, a $10,000 contribution to the Diamond Council of America (DCA) Industry Education Fund demonstrated AGTA’s commitment to supporting educational initiatives.

In 2016, AGTA’s bylaws and Code of Ethics were adopted by the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA), marking a positive development for the global gemstone sector. AGTA also engaged in a Myanmar-sanctions white paper study, contributing $150,000 to the initiative and presenting comprehensive findings to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Congress.

AGTA’s humanitarian commitment was evident in 2017 when funds were raised for the victims of the Sri Lanka floods, underscoring the association’s dedication to global causes.

In 2020, AGTA established the Educational Fund in honor of gemstone dealer Richard Greenwood, solidifying its commitment to fostering knowledge within the gem and jewelry industry.

The journey continued in 2023 when AGTA collaborated with the Colorado School of Mines for an extensive multi-year research project, exploring the intricacies of colored-gemstone supply chains and best practices.

Beyond its core activities, AGTA has opened its doors to local school children at the Tucson show, offering them a firsthand exploration of the gemstone world, nurturing passion and knowledge.

AGTA’s stringent membership criteria, with a rigorous vetting process, ensures the association’s integrity. Members are required to have a five-year industry tenure and three firm member recommendations, contributing to AGTA’s comprehensive understanding of the industry.

In over 40 years, AGTA has seen more than 200 firm members serve on its board, embodying a legacy of ethical conduct and transparency. AGTA remains steadfast as a beacon of integrity, guiding the gemstone industry towards a future defined by excellence and responsibility.
