Anticipation Builds for Tucson Gem Shows: Five Must-See Highlights

by Madonna

As I prepare for my maiden voyage to the expansive gem shows nestled in the Tucson desert, I’ve compiled a wish list of experiences not to be missed. While the sheer size of the shows initially seemed daunting, I’ve come to realize that the grander the event, the more thrilling discoveries await.

With a hopeful outlook, here are five eagerly anticipated highlights during my debut visit to the Tucson gem and mineral shows next week.

1. Supply Chain Research Unveiling

Having attended a captivating session at the Hardrock Summit last fall, featuring updates on data extracted by Colorado School of Mines Ph.D. student Jenna White, I’m keen to delve deeper into the Transparent & Traceable Gemstone Supply Chains Initiative. This joint venture between the school and the American Gem Trade Association promises further insights, with a focus on colored gemstone supply chains. The AGTA seminar on Feb. 2, titled “Challenges and Opportunities in Responsible Gemstone Supply Chains,” will showcase field data collected from select gemstone mining sites and provide a platform for miners to share their on-the-ground experiences.

2. Ethical Gem Fair Unveiling Responsible Practices

Highlighting the importance of responsible mining, I look forward to The Ethical Gem Fair Tucson’s fourth annual event. This trade-only gathering, taking place from Jan. 27 to 30 at the Tucson Scottish Rite Cathedral, will feature brands and professionals committed to ethical practices. Participants include Agere Treasures, Anza Gems, Capricorn Gems, Columbia Gem House, Nineteen48, Perpetuum Jewels, Nature’s Geometry, Quore Jewelry, and Virtu Gem. The fair aims to connect those seeking responsibly sourced gemstones with a community dedicated to positive social and environmental impact.

3. The Big Winners at AGTA Spectrum Awards

Having marveled at unique gemstone cuts during the Hardrock Summit, I’m eager to identify and celebrate the winners in the AGTA Spectrum Awards’ Cutting Edge division. Of particular interest is the suite of Paraiba-type tourmalines from Joseph Ambalu of Amba Gem Corp.

4. Live Gem Cutting Demonstrations

To truly appreciate the artistry behind gemstone cuts, I’m looking forward to AGTA’s Live Gem Cutting demonstrations. The Feb. 1 session, titled “Recutting to Close a Window,” led by Magus Gems’ Justin K. Prim, promises to unveil the intricacies of the cutting process. Prim, an American lapidary and gemologist based in Lyon, France, will demonstrate recutting and repolishing using a Sri Lankan-style handpiece faceting machine—a departure from typical American gemstone cutting methods.

5. Exploring the Mythical Tents

Amidst the grandeur of one of the nation’s largest gem and mineral shows, the allure of the mythical tents beckons. Following the advice of seasoned Tucson showgoers, I am eager to explore events such as the 22nd Street Show. These diverse shows offer opportunities to venture beyond my usual coverage, exploring fossils, minerals, and curated collections like Native American jewelry.

As I swap the sunny and humid memories of a press trip to Miami for the frigid, snowy embrace of New York, my focus now shifts to deciphering the desert-ready essentials for this exciting journey. See you in the desert!
